Mobile Detailing Add-On Sales: Attach Rate & Profit

Add-ons can raise the average ticket, but revenue alone hides the extra labor and products. Use attachment rate, per-sale contribution and available capacity to decide which services are worth offering.

The quick answer

Measure the percentage of eligible appointments that buy the add-on, then subtract its incremental labor, products, fees and other variable costs from revenue. Forecasting a higher rate is useful only when the service fits available appointment capacity.

Add-on contribution = add-on revenue − labor − products − other variable costs − payment fees

Calculate the add-on attachment rate

Attachment rate = add-on sales ÷ eligible appointments × 100

Use eligible appointments, not every customer in the database. A headlight restoration offer may be irrelevant to vehicles without visible oxidation. Pet-hair removal should only be counted where the condition and package make it a genuine additional service.

Define whether the rate means appointments with at least one add-on or units of a specific add-on. Do not switch definitions between reporting periods.

Calculate contribution per add-on

Labor per sale = add-on minutes ÷ 60 × labor cost per hour
Payment fee per sale = add-on price × fee rate
Contribution per sale = price − labor − products − other costs − payment fee

This contribution remains before fixed overhead and tax. It is still more useful than revenue because it shows whether the service adds enough value to justify the work.

Compare current and target sales

Expected add-on sales = eligible appointments × attachment rate
Added monthly contribution = target contribution − current contribution

A target is an operating assumption, not a guarantee. Use a rate supported by customer need, inspection history and a clear offer rather than assuming every appointment can convert.

Worked add-on example

Assume 45 eligible appointments per month. A $65 add-on currently attaches to 18% of appointments and the reasonable target is 35%. It needs 45 minutes, labor costs $28 per hour, products cost $5, other variable cost is $2 and the payment fee is 2.9%.

Current sales = 45 × 18% = 8.1 add-ons
Target sales = 45 × 35% = 15.75 add-ons
Contribution per sale = $65 − $21 labor − $5 products − $2 other − $1.89 fee = $35.11
Additional sales = 15.75 − 8.1 = 7.65 add-ons
Added contribution = 7.65 × $35.11 = $268.59 per month
Extra time = 7.65 × 45 minutes = 5.74 hours

The target creates positive contribution only if roughly 5.74 additional service hours fit the month.

Check available appointment capacity

Additional add-ons extend appointments. Compare extra hours with unused schedule capacity before treating the contribution as achievable.

Extra add-on hours = additional sales × minutes per add-on ÷ 60

If the target exceeds available time, improve routing, reduce low-value work, change the target or schedule the add-on separately. Rushing an inspection-sensitive service can create rework that the forecast does not include.

Offer add-ons without pressure

  • Identify a visible, relevant condition during inspection.
  • Explain the expected result and important limitations.
  • State the additional price and time before starting.
  • Keep before-service notes with the appointment.
  • Allow the customer to decline without friction.
  • Review completed-job contribution, not only sales count.
Keep the offer attached to the vehicle

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate add-on attachment rate?

Divide eligible appointments that purchase the add-on by all eligible appointments and multiply by 100.

Is add-on revenue the same as profit?

No. Subtract extra labor, products, payment fees and other variable costs to calculate contribution before fixed overhead and tax.

How can detailers offer add-ons without being pushy?

Inspect the vehicle, explain the visible problem and expected result, state price and time clearly, and let the customer decline without pressure.
